#FreeCyntoiaBrown

Celebrities and the general public are using the social media platform Twitter to express their outrage with the justice system after Cyntoia Brown was imprisoned for murder. At 28 years old, Brown was sentenced to life in prison, after being arrested at 16 in 2004, for the murder of Johnny Mitchell Allen. Cyntoia Brown has never denied shooting Allen, but claims that an ex boyfriend forced her into prostitution and was repeatedly drugged and raped for days before finding the courage to fight back; which lead her to shooting 43 year old Allen after her took her to his home for sex.

Users of Twitter have expressed their outrage with the fact that Brown has been sentenced for life, even though she was human trafficked and practically acted in self-defence. Further issues outside of the fact that a victim who survived human trafficking was imprisoned, have arisen with the American justice system. Some people have concerns that Brown was only 16 at the time of the crime and yet she was tried as an adult, and suggest that she, amongst other kids also tried as adults, will have the rest of their lives determined on poor choices made at a young age even though haven't had time to develop as an adult.

Personally, I agree with the outrage on twitter considering that Cyntoia Brown suffered and survived human trafficking and had a horrendous ordeal and is now being punished for it. Although she did kill a man, she didn't deserve life in prison over it, but rather help and support from the system in order to deal and cope with the whole situation and rehabilitate her, and if there had to be time in prison it definitely should not be life.

  1. Great find Teghan, there seems to certainly be some injustice there, could this be linked to her age and the fact that she is a woman that she has been ill treated?Consider if the gender and background of the Judge may have played a part in the apparent harsh sentencing. Remember it is vital to state the source and explore whether or not this bear any bias on the reporting of the story. Well Done.

    1. Again in future news postings i will contextualise my work and explore why said newspaper or journalist has written about the story and how their viewpoint may have impacted on the content of the article

  2. You've mentioned the representations of both age (in terms of the young girl involved in the story being sentenced for killing the man who abused and how the man who died wasn't blamed for the crime he committed) and have used all of the CCCEO. You have also included an image to relate to the story and included the source of where you've got the information from.
