Women Exploitation VS Empowerment in Music Videos
New Rules- Dua Lipa
New Rules by Dua Lipa spreads a message of women empowerment through the lyrics and the music video. Although the costumes worn may be considered provocative, the women in the video aren't dressed in that manner for the sake of any males, but rather for themselves; hence why this is an example of women empowerment rather than exploitation. If the women had dressed in that manner to gain attention from males, then it could be considered as them exploiting themselves. Dua Lipa sings about women learning to not be exploited and taken advantage off by men after a break up. The purpose of this video is empower women and tell them they're better and worth more than to be taken advantage off.
Power- little Mix
Little Mix point out that women have power, and spreads a positive representation of women in their video. Much like the previous video, this music video encodes a message of women empowerment, rather than women exploitation. In this video, the women are also wearing clothing that can be considered provocative, as it shows of their bodies, but yet again they have not dressed that way in order to attract males. The meaning of the song and video is meant to empower women through lyrics such as 'Baby, you're the man but I got the, I got the, I got the power'. The song and video addresses the issue of male dominance and patriarchy, men think women dress that way for their purposes whereas in actual fact, women generally don't dress in that manner to attract men, rather just because they like the way they look..
Candy Shop- 50 Cent
The exploitation of women in this video only decodes a message to the audience that women are sexual objects, and that they can easily be taken advantage off
Very good Teghan a good selection of videos and a clear explanation of the topics that we discussed. There a a few small grammatical errors that you could perhaps pick up on a proof read and the phrases Women empowerment & Women exploitation could be replaced with Female instead of Women. Good layout and addition of the videos, going forward have a look at the context of production which record label, who directed the video and maybe the stylist. Could their genders this explain how or why these videos could be perceived as exploitative or empowering?
ReplyDeleteThe record labels and genders of the artists may impact if the videos are considered exploitative or empowering for women
