What is cross-platform advertising?

Cross-platform advertising refers to that way products are advertised on more than one types of different media platforms, such as TV, radio, and billboards. Many companies will use cross-platform advertising with the objective of getting a wider audience to view the advertised product- allowing a chance of gaining a larger profit. Cross-platform advertising is boosted by the presence of social media, as the advertisers are campaigning to a wider demographic of audiences.

Furthermore, whilst using cross-platform advertising, companies will make different types of adverts for the same product either identical or very similar in order to achieve synergy. Synergy allows audiences to easily recognise a brand and their products. One example of a brand using cross-platform advertising with synergy is Cadburys advertisements for their new 'dairy milk' range. Cadbury achieved synergy in their cross-platform advert campaign, (advertised on TV and billboard) though the use of the same colour palette, main image, the iconic slogan, and both adverts used a hashtag which can urge consumers to use social media to talk about the product- which advertises the advert further, through word-of-mouth. Using cross-platform advertising and synergy, Cadbury is one of the most popular and consumed chocolate brand in the world.

Cross-platform can be seen in a variety of different adverts, not just adverts where people are encouraged to buy the products, but also in campaigns that encourage the audience to do something, such as political adverts. Political parties will advertise their ethos and manifesto through leaflets, and broadcast on TVs, and radio. The use of cross-platform advertising is successful as they're able to reach and influence a bigger wide of audience.

However, there are disadvantages of cross-platform advertising, the main being its expensive to make a campaign. Expensives come from the production of many different adverts and types and if the campaign doesn't achieve its goal and promote the brand, the brand may begin losing profits- especially if the campaign isn't decoded as meant to by the target audience.

Overall, cross-platform advertising in an effective way of adverting an advert campaign and acquiring a larger and broader range of audience. Its idealistic that many brands and companies should you cross-platform advertising in future campaigns in order to increase awareness of the brand and product to an extensive audience.
